The megacity Rises to Dangerous Haze Post Diwali

As Tuesday dawned residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" range.

Extremely High Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of the capital showed an AQI above 500, which equals 10x the recommended limit set by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of eighteen hundred, representing fifteen to twenty times exceeding safe limits.

Fireworks Ban and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly pollution that blankets the metropolis as colder weather begins.

Yet in recent months, the recently formed city leadership appealed to the highest court to propose a relaxation of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Enforcement

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, the court approved the appeal, specifying that green firecrackers could be used during limited time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Many air quality sensors throughout the city registered air quality reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst levels observed during celebrations in at least three years.

International Consequences

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing declining atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation continuing to worsen.

During Diwali, the amount of dangerous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the most severe records ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated city.

Various Contamination Sources

This crisis in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of various sources including automobile exhaust, dust, development work, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.

Within these states, farmers routinely ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.

Health and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous investigations.

The contaminated air causes increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can result in oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is projected to be responsible for ten thousand untimely deaths per year in the city.
