Steve Bannon, Tucker Carlson and... Liz Truss? Inside the Ex- PM's Attempt for Make America Great Again

Britain's shortest-serving prime minister, launched the first edition of her YouTube show with a promise to reveal "those with ill intent" working to weaken Western democracies. Truss elaborated she would reveal how an "international network of liberal activists operate to undermine popular rule and the will of the people."

"We're going to look at the Maga phenomenon and understand how this can be replicated in Britain," the former PM stated. "Our guests will include the leading lights of the Maga movement."

Prior to the program's debut, there was one particularly enthusiastic supporter. "This represents the dawn of a kind of transformation," remarked veteran reporter John Solomon. The right-leaning Just the News will publish the ex-PM's new audio shows.

Building Connections in the Conservative Media Landscape

UK-based allies, such as a pro-Reform adviser, played a role in her establish the her new show. The production is adequate, if basic. The show has attracted a subscriber base of 10k in her debut week and her first episode had tens of thousands of views in that timeframe.

It is a humble beginning, but in partnering with Solomon, she is being thrust into a mature right-wing media network producing and amplifying pro-Trump narratives. Key fixations include alleged censorship by the traditional news outlets and a goal to eradicate a conspiratorial 'deep state' – which Truss blames for the abrupt termination of her disastrous time in office.

"The platform is not famous past the Maga-verse, but it does have gravitas there, largely because of its founder, who gives commentary on pro-Trump shows like the program hosted by Steve Bannon and has even questioned the former president," noted Alex Hinton, who has closely studied the Make America Great Again phenomenon.

A Divisive Associate

Truss's attempt to bring Maga media to the UK has aligned her more closely to contentious individuals such as John Solomon.

He founded Just the News in the wake of scrutiny when allegations surfaced of circulating inaccurate reports about Joe Biden's anticorruption effort in the Ukraine, as well as controversial stories about one-time diplomat to that country.

These allegations were echoed across the conservative press, with the journalist serving as a common interviewee on the widely-watched Fox News show. Donald Trump promoted the journalist's work.

He wrote the allegations regarding Ukraine in a set of articles for the publication the Hill, after having been re-designated as an opinion writer after colleagues complained over his articles. His narratives were pivotal in the then-president's request for the officials in Kyiv to probe Hunter Biden and his father in that year. This pressure resulted in impeachment charges against the president. The Senate later voted to acquit the commander-in-chief.

Shortly after he exited the newspaper in autumn 2019, the outlet announced it was conducting a review of his work concerning Ukraine. It determined Solomon had relied on questionable informants and said he "failed to identify key facts about main Ukrainian informants, specifically the reality that they had been charged or were being probed."

Joining the Network

His TV and radio guest spots are a indication of the right-wing media network Liz Truss is becoming part of. Solomon mentioned his endorsement of the program on a show he co-hosts on Real America's Voice, a rightwing cable channel that is where you find the Maga influencer Steve Bannon and on which commentator Tucker Carlson also appears. The ex-PM has already spoken with Bannon on an early episode.

Through her association with this media figure, Truss has become a minor player in a broader ecosystem of conservative media outlets that often share and promote one another's material.

Solomon's own podcast and Real America's Voice show have repeatedly hosted personalities such as influencer Mike Benz, a political voice whose arguments against the foreign aid agency was cited by the tech billionaire as justification for dismantling the international development organization.

A Cross-Border Foray

Even though Truss's stilted style and political travails have been mocked at home, some US observers are taking seriously her efforts to reinvent herself as a local version of the Make America Great Again press.

"It is necessary to treat folks like that with seriousness, although you may not want to take them literally," commented a former Biden White House aide, who served in the Obama White House.

"It was evident how in 2024 the former president utilized that media network to get his message out. Certainly that network spreads and shapes conversation abroad. It appears quite apparent to me that the circumstances in the UK are comparable to what enabled this non-mainstream media network to flourish in the US."

Professor Alan Finlayson, said the online conservative ecosystem was already exerting influence in Britain.

"Digital media transcends national boundaries," he said. "There's a kind atmosphere within which ideas travel – on occasion appearing in harsh versions and occasionally in softer tones – but which is networked."

Hinton said the expansion of the internet-based right wing in the United Kingdom recently meant the "potential to have a larger effect is considerable."
