Over 20 Olympic champions, trainers and other world-class competitors have put their names to a letter demanding a stop to the capital punishment of a boxing champion and trainer, who is facing execution in Iran.

Escalating Global Anger

Amid rising worldwide anger over the country's expanding employment of executions as a tool of suppression, the strongly worded statement condemns the government's verdict to maintain the execution order of the boxing champion.

Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from the city in the northern province, was detained for taking part in nationwide protests in the year 2019 and accused of aiding an resistance movement. He has spent five years in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and confined in solitary confinement.
