The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
